Zoo officials say Babirusas are endangered due to shrinking habitat and over-hunting.
While all three sub-species' population trends ARE decreasing, only the Togian Islands Babirusa is currently listed by the IUCN as 'Endangered', while the other two are currently listed as 'Vulnerable': March 25th, 2011.

The babirusa, also known as the deer-pig, was likely discovered by local indigenous people in Indonesia thousands of years ago. However, in terms of the Western scientific community, it was officially described and named by Dutch zoologist Anthonie Cornelis Oudemans in 1907.
