The Eiffel tower was built as the symbol for Exposition Universelle of 1889, a World Fair marking the 100th anniversary of the storming of Bastille, the beginning of the famous French Revolution. In a twisted, yet upright way, it stands for France's freedom from Tyranny!

It decorates the west side of Paris quite nicely and attracts zillions of tourists. I believe there are broadcasting antennae on top as well. It's also a great place to see the rest of the city. Bit crowded though.
