Look at the 'bit', the part that gets hot that you do the soldering with. It should have an inclined flat surface on the end. If it has not, make one by using a file.
Heat the soldering iron up. At the same time get the solder out, which should be tin solder with internal flux. When the iron is hot, quickly file the surface of the bit clean and apply the solder, which should immediately 'take' to the surface.
