In general a female thread is cut with a tap. A male thread is cut with a die.
Any time male/female is used to describe something in construction, it refers to which part fits into the other. The male threads into the female part. It is not a type of thread, but how it does it.

The only sure method is to have the appropriate internal (female) thread eg. a nut available and to try this on the cut thread. If the fit is too tight then another cut or pass must be made on the lathe. If you are cutting both male and female threads to match then cut the female thread first and use it to check the cutting of the male thread. Submitted by Bill Lavery

In Greek mythology, the phrase "cut the thread of life" refers to the act of the Fates, who were three goddesses responsible for spinning, measuring, and cutting the thread that represented a person's life. When they decided it was time for someone to die, they would cut the thread, symbolizing the end of that person's life. So, in a nutshell, cutting the thread of life in Greek mythology means that your time is up, honey.

In crocheting, to end off means to cut the yarn or crochet thread and tie it so that it cannot unravel. What I usually do is cut the thread for enough for at least five knots. Then I do a single stich, pulling the cut thread through the loop that was on the hook. Then I tie at least two knots.
