If you are getting a humming noise then you probably have an earth loop. This is where the resistance from one piece of equipment has a higher resistance than on other piece that it is connected to. The current flows through the lower resistance piece of equipment back to the earth on the mains causing the hum.
There are two ways to cure this. the method used by recording studios is to create a star Earth. This is where all the earths from all devices comes back to a central earth point then to the mains earth.
The alternative method is to break the shield at one end on the patch lead that goes from each device to interrupt the mains loop and force the earth current to run back down the mains cable earth.
