Because HTML "hides" things directly, you can add a link to anywhere and send the browser into The Twilight Zone. Sometimes the link actually goes to "the" site - the one from which the prank draws its name.

In a "true" Rickroll, you can take the link to Rick's song and rename it anything you want. That way it "appears" as a "good" link to a related page, but actually directs the user who clicks on it to the real target page - the music video of Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley. The only way the user can avoid it is to actually roll the cursor over the link and read in the net information bar the actual target page to which the link will direct the user if he clicks on it. Many users just click on a link without "previewing" the target address. If they just "click and go" they'll get Rickrolled.

A link is provided to the YouTube post. And if you click on it, you won't get Rickrolled because you've been told up front where it links you to.
