There are several different types of handguns.

Single-Shot Pistol - pre-1840's design. Single ShotEarly guns were single-shot pistols that were loaded from the muzzle end. Black powder was poured into the barrel and the bullet forced on top of the powder. A Flintlock pistol was fired using a hammer that held a flint rock that fell against a Frizzen that created sparks. The hammer would force the frizzen away to expose the powder to the sparks. Revolver PistolThe Revolver was designed to allow the user to load 6 shots or more. The gun operates by rotating the cylinder containing the loaded rounds in individual Chambers. By pulling back the hammer (i.e. cocking the gun), the hammer moves a ratchet that rotates the Cylinder to a unfired chamber. This mechanism was copied from the windless of a ship. The gun is fired by pulling the trigger, thus releasing the hammer, allowing it to fall on the chamber to fire the bullet. Automatic PistolVery complicated mechanism. The gun has a slide mechanism that is pulled back and picks up a new bullet from the magazine in the grip of the gun. When the slide returned, it would cock the gun so that it would fire when the trigger is pulled.
