Zener diodes attempt to keep the voltage across their terminals constant. They are often used in power supplies to regulate output voltage to 3, 9, 12, 15, etc. volts. Unlike a typical diode, current may be allowed to flow in either direction to regulate the output voltage.

Can a fuse take the place of a diode temporarily?

No - a fuse is designed as a safety device - to operate within a specific range. It performs a completely different function to a diode.

What do you call a diode installed across a coil with the cathode toward the battery positive?

A diode connected in this way is a flyback diode or kickback diode. There are some other names that may be applied. The diode is a protection device. When power to the coil is discontinued, the electromagnetic field around the coil will collapse. The collapse of that field will induce a voltage, and this could expose circuit elements to "kickback" from the field collapse. The polarity of the induced voltage will, however, forward bias the diode, and it will conduct current for an instant. The inductive kickback of the coil will thus be damped by that diode.

Difference between gunn diode and pin diode?

gunn diode is transfered electron device & PIN diode is semiconductor device

Is diode an active or passive device?

An active device is a device that takes input energy to operate. The only energy a diode uses is from the signal applied to it (it has one input, one output, and no other terminals), so it is a passive device. To be an active device, a separate power source must be applied to it - such as the case for operation amplifiers, for example.

Is rectifier a non linear device?

diode is nonlinear device,so device from diode is also nonlinear

Is diode an active device?

A passive device is a diode resistor coil and so forth it perform no enhancement to the circuit or act on it.

What is blocking diode?

any diode if connected to where the anode is tie to a negative potential will block that voltage. Up to the limit of the breakdown potential of the diode whereby avalanche current will destroy the diode unless current limited
