A vasectomy is permanently, unless you reverse it or an spontaneous re-canalisation occurs. A re-canalisation happens very rarely and mostly in the first years and a reversal is not so easy and it is not sure you become fertile again.
But be careful because you are not immediately sterile after the surgery: you need about a twenty ejaculations before you give a sample to verify if you are "clean".
If there is no sperm anymore in your semen you are permanently sterile.
