How would you use a fixed pulley to lift something heavier than yourself?

You have to have the right size pulley for the weight of the object you want to move and a secure place to attach it. Then, once it's all hooked up, you'll need to generate the force to pull on the rope or cable that will then move your object. If it is more than you can produce with your body, you can attach an engine to it and let it do the work.

You cannot use an overhead fixed pulley, or class 1 pulley, to singlehandedly lift something heavier than yourself, since you do not have enough weight to offset the object you are lifting. By definition, a fixed pulley is a single pulley that does not move - it is anchored. You could ask a friend to help you pull on the rope, and if the two of you weigh more than the object, then you could lift the object with a single overhead fixed pulley.

You could use a fixed pulley that was mounted on a wall at chest height to singlehandedly lift something heavier than you. The rope would loop from the weight up to the pulley, and then make a right angle turn at the pulley and stretch out across (parallel to the ground) to your hands. By bracing one of your feet against the wall, if you are strong enough, you can use the leverage you gain from your foot braced against the wall to pull on the rope with enough force to lift an object heavier than yourself.
