It's generally not necessary to use Teflon tape when installing shower stems, as they typically have rubber or neoprene washers that create a watertight seal. However, if the threads of the shower stem are particularly worn or if you're working with metal-to-metal connections, a small amount of Teflon tape can help prevent leaks. Always ensure that tape is applied sparingly and does not interfere with the fitting.
There are generally two main types of shower tub stems: cartridge stems and compression stems. Cartridge stems use a cartridge to control water flow and temperature, while compression stems operate by tightening or loosening a rubber washer against a valve seat. Some systems may also feature ball or ceramic disc stems, which offer different mechanisms for water control. These variations cater to different plumbing setups and user preferences.

Common issues that can arise with shower faucet stems include leaks, dripping, difficulty turning the handle, and inconsistent water temperature. These issues can be fixed by replacing the worn-out washers or O-rings, adjusting the valve seat, or replacing the entire stem if necessary. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs can help prevent these issues from occurring.

Does the shower drip constantly over a period of 4-5 hours, if not, it's water holding in the shower head which has a water saving feature that holds water in the head. If it drips constantly, you'll need to change your seals on your stems. It's fairly simple if you have the correct tools.
Be aware that for the first few minutes after turning off you will get the shower head leak a little. This is because the shower head has a large cavity inside that fills up with water in use. When you turn off, that water has to go somewhere, so it dribbles through the outlets of the shower head. If both shower heads are off no water should be going to your shower head. the only thing it could be is your shower valve itself. you probably have a pinhole in one of your o rings on the valve stem. try replacing the valve stems. I would start by replacing all the washers and o-rings on the hot and cold valves ( a lot cheaper than replacing the entire valve stem ). Try replacing the Valves, and then the pipe holders, (for want of a better word) to the wall. The shower diverter has a bad seal - very easy to replace.
