If it is out of date or needs a major repair, it would be best to replace it, however if it is a minor repair that takes little time and effort, you would most likely save money by fixing it yourself.

Would water softner beads block the water pipes Our washer would not work on cold water. I removed the cw hose from the facet and it was packed full of small gold beads. Why is this something else?

Yes the little gold beads will block your water lines. I am dealing with a clogged line now that is about 100 ft long under ground, the supply line. In my case the water line broke and let the water softner beads come out of the water softner and flushed back down the supply line. I have not at this time removed all of the beads from the line and am not sure that I can get it done. I may have to dig up my line and replace it. So, yes, the little gold beads are flushing back down your supply line and will clog the cold water line.

Will water from a water softner hurt a guinea pig?

No. Water softeners replace the calcium and magnesium in some water supplies with sodium ions that cause fewer issues for pipes and soap. None of which would be in high enough quantities to be harmful. However, you might just want to give the animal filtered water.
