Not necessarily, in the UK in the 1950s and 60s there were single-phase 480 V supplies with a neutral centre-tap giving two 240 V supplies with opposite phase. It is still used in rural areas, a three-wire single-phase supply, but individual properties do not normally have a 480 V supply. Normally the supply is used for small groups of houses where half the houses are put on one side of the supply and the others on the other half. When both groups of houses use the same amount of current, there is no current returning in the neutral wire, which gives lower distribution losses.
The type of transformer is dictated by the type of supply. A three-phase supply is used in power distribution because it dispenses with half the wire and therefore half the power losses in the circuit. In principle a three-phase transformer could be replaced by three separate single-phase transformers to provide the same service, but there would be double the mass of transformers, in other words the three single-phase transformers would be twice the weight of the three-phase transformer.
you can't have half wave rectified polyphase AC power, unless you are using only one of the phases. however with only one diode from each phase of three 50 Hz phases the ripple frequency is 150 Hz, with two making a full three phase bridge the ripple frequency is 300 Hz. perhaps that was what you meant.
