This answer needs a slight correction. Chemicals are NOT used to extract minerals during mining in the United States. In some instances in South America, chemicals are used to "cluster" ores together, but this practice is not used in the United States. "Pollution of streams" that occurs in the United States is usually from the natural acidity of the geologic formations. Mining companies in the United States are required by federal law to take steps to decrease the drainage of acidic strata, so water pollution is not as prevalent as believed.

• The depletion of resources rather than the reuse of existing materials, or use of materials readily available on the surface (e.g. hydropower, solar power instead of coal and uranium)
