The strength of steel is graded based on it's yield strength- the point that it will have a permenant deformation from a load.

Steel will be graded however an engineer requires it to be in order to meet the design criteria. In order to keeps things simple and economical, common grades are: Mild which is essentially untreated for any design strength; A36 (with a 36,000 psi yield strength); and A51 (with a 51,000 psi yield strength).

Most buildings are designed with A36 in mind and it is by far the most common. Cars, industrial equiment, and special construction may use A51 or higher. Since steel becomes more expensive the more it is treated, any product or assembly requiring anything other than standard yield strength will require an analysis showing the cost savings of using less higher-strength steel versus more lower-strenght steel.

Steel comes in other varieties, like stainless (with its own grading characteristics) or corten (meant to be exposed to the weather).

Stainless steel pipes are produced in a wide variety of grades depending on their intended use. Grades such as 304 and 316 are common stainless steel pipes grades. However stainless steel pipe is also produced in grades like 303, 410 and 416. Even more exotic high strength high temperature grades like hastelloy and inconel are available as pipe.

The correct grade is determined by the environment that it will be subjected to. The type of corrosion and the temperature of the environment play a very important role in choosing the correct grade.

There are many thousands of alloys of steel. Steels are classified into different types of alloys based on their intended usage.

There are low, medium and high carbon steels in many different grades determined by the carbon content, ranging from .08 to 1.5% carbon. Alloy steels are produced to be used as a high stength steel and most of them can be heat treated.

Alloys steels include grades like 4140, 4340, 6150, 5160 and 8620 as the most common alloy steels.

Tool steels are produced in a wide variety of alloys with various levels of toughness, wear resistance, hardness and heat resistance. These alloys are designed to be used as tools, such as punches, dies and cutters to form other parts. They include grades like A-2, D-2, H-13, S-7 etc.

High speed steels include alloys like M-2, M-4, M-48 and T-15. These grades are generally used in cutting operations as some sort of cutting tool, such as a drill, hob, reamer or knife where high heat resistance is required.

Steel alloys also include stainless steels which include common grades like 304 and 316 or heat resistant high strength grades like Hastelloy and Monel. Stainless grades fall into two categories, which are Chromium or Nickel based grades.
