Locked rotor amperage is the amperage the motor draws when the voltage is first applied to the motor and the rotor has not started to turn. This amperage is usually up to 300% of the motors running amperage. Once the rotor starts to turn the motor generates a back EMF (electro motive force) that opposes the high inrush current. This back EMF drives the amperage down until the motor gets up to its rated speed at which time the motor amperage will be at its run amperage.

What does LRA stand for in electrical terms?

LRA stands for locked rotor amps. It is the very high current drawn by a motor at the instant it receives power, but before the motor has started to turn. Typical LRA values can be anywhere between 3 and 8 times the full-load running current.

How do you calculate 3phase compresser lra to tonnage?

To calculate the LRA (Locked Rotor Amperage) of a three-phase compressor in terms of tonnage, you can use the formula: Tonnage = (LRA × Voltage) / (1.732 × Efficiency × 12,000). Here, 1.732 represents the square root of 3, and 12,000 is the conversion factor for BTUs to tons. Ensure you have the correct voltage and efficiency values for accurate calculations. This approach provides an estimate of the cooling capacity based on the compressor's electrical characteristics.

Is it ok to use an lra higher or lower than indicated on the compressor?

It is not recommended to use an LRA (Locked Rotor Amperage) higher than what is indicated on the compressor because it can damage the compressor and the electrical system. Using a lower LRA may not provide enough starting current for the compressor to function properly. It is best to follow the manufacturer's guidelines for LRA when selecting a replacement compressor.

How do you calculate LRA to tonnage in three phase?

To calculate LRA (Locked Rotor Amperes) to tonnage in a three-phase system, first determine the LRA value of the motor, usually provided on the motor nameplate. Then, use the formula: Tonnage = (LRA × Voltage × √3) / (3,517 × Efficiency × Power Factor), where the voltage is the line-to-line voltage in volts, and the efficiency and power factor are the motor's operational values. This will estimate the cooling capacity in tons based on the motor's electrical characteristics.
