What does self check mean?

Self check is a collection of tests built into a device that it automatically performs on itself to verify that it is functioning correctly.

There are 3 main types of self check: startup self check, periodic self check, and initiated self check.

1. startup self check - runs automatically when the device is turned on and can test parts of the device that could not be tested once it is fully running normally
2. periodic self check - runs automatically in the background on a periodic schedule
3. initiated self check - runs when requested by the user or a technician and can test user interfaces in an interactive mode that cannot be tested in the other 2 types of self check

Sometimes self check is called built in test (BIT) and the 3 types are SBIT, PBIT, and IBIT respectively.
