A hand catapult (or slingshot) is a Y-shaped device, which is usually made from a forked branch. The lower leg of the Y is held in one hand while the other hand pulls against a length of elastic which is joined at each end to the two upright arms of the Y. As the elastic is pulled back tension builds up in it and it is then suddenly released to fire a stone or other object.

Much larger Catapults were also used in ancient times to hurl huge rocks to break down castle walls and other defenses.
