depends on what you want to test it for. best way is with a multimeter. Radioshack or an electronics parts store will have them I'm replacing a ceiling light fixture attached to 2 3-way switches. Original question clarified: After replacing the switches with the breaker off, I turned it on and checked the wires in the ceiling box. Using a Radioshack Micronta Range Doubler on the AC side, The switches seemed to function normally with each switch capable to turn on and off the circuit from either side. However when both switches are turned off, their is a small current detected in the wires in the box.

The other wiring I have discovered is that the common wiring in the 2nd 3-way switch is also connected to the common wiring of an adjacent unipolar switch (on another circuit and light) in the same box.
