Each instruction normally translates directly into a single numeric instruction codes (or op-codes) that can be read and understood directly by a processor. The instructions use mnemonics, a set of short letter sequences that represent specific op-codes. Examples include ADD and SUB for addition or subtraction, JP and CALL for jumps to other parts of a program or to sub routines.

Assembly languages allow direct access to the hardware of a computer system and are often used without any operating system. The resulting code is very compact and if written well, runs faster than high level languages that produce larger, more complex blocks of code.
