The Sun is just the closest star. The fact that there are two names is the result of ancient underestimation of distance. The Sun is close enough to appear round, but all other stars are so distant they appears as points of light. Shining through our atmosphere, they display apparent spikes, so we conventionally represent "stars" as spiky, but in reality they're round, too.

The Sun is a medium-sized star; some are bigger (some are WAY bigger), but most - about 80% - are smaller. This is sometimes not realized because the stars we see are all big ones; the dwarf stars are too dim.
