In a single slider crank mechanism when one of its links is fixed it gives a motion in which one of d link is fixed, 2nd link acts as a crank which is connected to a piston (acts as a slider )an the piston is pivoted on the fixed link. As the crank rotates the piston reciprocates (piston is enclosed in a cylinder). At the other end of the cylinder (on which the fixed link is not connected) another link is connected at the end of which a cutting tool is fixed . There is a crank which is connected to a lever which had a shaft through it. As the crank is turned, the lever goes up and down. A pole can be connected to the lever with a fairy or whatever to show flight or whatever. A crank and slotted lever turns rotational motion into an up and down oscillating motion.
The theory of the Slider-crank mechanism is while the entire mechanism has six free degrees, the whole system only has one free degree. When those six degrees start moving, the whole thing can only move in circular motions.

The rotating part is called to be the crank and the piston which is made to move forword and backword is said to be the the slider. in case of automobiles the input energy or the valve motion of the slider rotates tehe crank as well and the force that has been supplied to the slider produces the torque on the crank which helps in the rotation of the wheel as aresult the vehical starts moving.The other examples are Reciprocating pumps, Reciprocating comprssor etc. And also in case of the Typewriter,Clocks etc, the force that has been suplied to the slider is unable to over come the friction of the crank and hence the force is utilise as much it is required
