A building code refers to the standard and safety of a building project. Most countries have their own codes or standards to which buildings must be constructed to make sure they are safe and well built. Inspections by Buildings Officers make sure the codes are adhered to.
This is a building code issue, and so varies depending on location. For example, the State of New York specifies that the maximum difference in riser height for any flight of stairs is 3/8 inch.

Hello, My name is Terry and I am a help expert in the building and construction field. Yes, it is possible to construct a treated lumber foundation. It must however, be constructed and inspected by your local building department. There are minimum specifications that can be obtained from the International Residential Code, International Building Code, Universal Building Code, California Building Code and other codes that are specific to different areas of the country. You must work closely with your building official to determine which code you should be following. Structural design is the basis for safety and durability in a structure, and should always be completed by a competent individual. In my area we require that licensed design professionals such as structural engineers and architects be involved with most designs. With wood foundations, moisture and pest deterioration are probably the most significant issues. In some areas, such as California, seismic considerations are also in effect. It is always best to verify CODE SPECIFIC information with your local Building Official and/or Building Department as local laws and codes do tend to vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. I hope you have found this helpful! Terry CBO
The International Building Code (IBC) states the following:104.1 General. The building official is hereby authorized and directed to enforce the provisions of this code. Such policies and procedures shall not have the effect of waiving requirements specifically provided for in this code.Your local building official must develop a plan to implement and enforce the local codes in your area. Check with them to verify any code related information. There may also be local, county, state and federal regulations that will over ride or clarify portions of the codes.ALWAYS chech with the local building department for code related verification.HI :)

Building Codes, such as the International Building Code or International Residential Code are products of the International Code Council. These "model" codes are considered by many, if not most, to be the industry standard. A state or local jurisdiction adopts these and other codes through the adoption of an "enabling ordinance". Typically, the ordinance is posted for public comment for 90 days, after which it takes effect. The jurisdiction may then enforce the adopted code(s).
