in correct sense it is not the layer but the region around the metallurgical junction which is depleted of charge carriers .in this region an internal electric field exist which counter balance the diffusion of electron and hole around the junction .

basically the main reason for the formation of depletion region is the concentration gradient across metallurgical junction of p-n semiconductor.

What is extrinsic conductor?

Impure semi conductor material are called extrinsic semi conductor as there a small quantity of foreign particle is present. Two types of impurities are added to an extrinsic semi conductor. When impurities belonging to third group are called as trivalent or acceptor impurities such as boron, aluminum, indium or gallium when these impurities are added in pure semi conductors they form p-type semi conductor. And similarly when impurities belonging to group fifth called as penta valent or donor impurities such as arsenic, antimony, bismuth or phosphorus are added to a semi conductor they form N-type semi conductor .

What is concentric cable transmission line?

It is a shielded high voltage cable made up of center conductor with the next layer being a semi-con layer followed by a insulation layer with another layer of semi-con wrapped with a copper stranded ground and covered by a protective jacket. It is usually three wires, each carrying a phase of the three phase primary that most power companies generate today.

What is semi conductor diode?

Semiconductor diodes are made from the same Silicon, and occasionally Germanium, material that transistors, integrated circuits, etc. are made from. Diodes used in early electronic devices were made from vacuum tubes. Somewhat later diodes were made from finned stacks of Selenium. Simple "Crystal Radios" use Galena (lead ore) crystals with a steel pin that is manipulated to find a spot that allows electrical current to flow in only one direction.
