What make a file executable?

This depends upon the operating system. In Windows, the operating system determines if a file is executable by the file extension. There are three windows executable file extensions that I know of: .exe, .com and .scr .com is the simplest executable file: it's contents are simply copied into memory and execution begins at the beginning of the file in memory. Because of this simplicity, .com files may be no larger than a little under 64KiB, and they can only be loaded into memory at address 0x0100. .exe files are more complicated: they are split up into multiple segments. The file contains a header, several tables, a .text section which contains the actual executable instructions, a .data section which contains any static or global data, and more. If the file does not match a specific structure, then the operating system will refuse to execute the file. Thus, in Windows, in order for a file to be executable, it must have the proper file extension, and it must match a specific format for that file extension.

What is meaning of default program in computer?

default program is an application that opens a file when you double-click it. For example, if you double-click a .TXT file in Windows and it automatically opens in Notepad, then Notepad is the default program for files with a ".txt" extension. If the file opens in Microsoft Word, then Microsoft Word is the default program. Default programs are necessary since many file types can be opened by more than one program. For example, your computer may have over a dozen applications that can open .JPG files. Therefore, theoperating system needs to know which program to open by default when you double-click a JPEG image file. Both Windows and Macintosh computers store a list of default programs for each file extension. These relationships between programs and file extensions are also called "file associations." Both the Windows and Macintosh operating systems allow you to change file associations if you don't like the default program that is associated with a certain file type. For example, if you prefer to play MP3 files in iTunes rather than Windows Media Player, you can change the ".mp3" file association to iTunes. This will set iTunes as the default program for all .MP3 files. Windows 7 has a built-in utility for configuring file associations called "Default Programs." This tool allows you to assign specific programs to one or more file extensions using a simple graphical interface. It also displays what file extensions are associated with each installed application. For more information on using the Windows 7 Default Programs tool, view theFileInfo.com Default Programs Help Article. While Mac OS X does not include a Default Programs tool, you can simply right-click a file and choose "Open With…" to select a different program to open it. If you want to change the default program for a specific file, select the file and choose File → Get Info. Then select a different program in the "Open with:" section of the window. If you want to change the default program for all files with the same extension, press the "Change All…" button

What part of a file name does window windows use to know which application to open to manage the file?

Windows uses the whole file-name extension. For example, a visual basic script extension is .vbs. Windows recognizes the pattern .vbs as a visual basic script,or a .txt short for text. .rtf for rich text format, and so forth. you can change default programs for the file extension in the control panel. File extensions that windows does not recognize are usually from programs or codecs you do not have on your computer.

So programs (and programmers) know what type of file they are dealing with. Windows needs to know so that if "clicked on" in Windows Explorer , it knows which program to start so that it can correctly process the file.

How do you send a video from Windows Media Player to Windows Movie Maker?

The Windows Media Player video has to be an actual file to be imported into Windows Movie Maker (meaning you can't drag and drop it).Although I haven't tried it, I believe you can copy the file from Windows Media Player and paste it into Windows Movie Maker (but I don't know this for sure). The best way to get media from Windows Media Player is to ensure it is Saved in the Library. Then, open the file's location and import it that way.

How does Windows graphically distinguish between file types?

Different file types have different file extensions. This is the three letters, after the dot in the file name. eg. *.exe is an executable file *.doc is a document file, used by windows Word. *.txt is a text file, opened by various word processors or notepad. Windows keeps a list of known file extensions and open the appropiate program when the file is clicked on. If windows does not know what to use to open it, it will have a generic icon and will prompt you for a program to open it, when you click on it. Be aware that Windows can hide the file extensions, so you won't be able to see it in file lists. You can change this. In explorer, click on 'tools' at the top of the window, then 'folder options', then 'view'. Down the list, you will see a tick box that hides known file extensions. Un-tick it, to see extensions in file lists. On the next tab 'File Types', you can see a list of all the know file extensions and the programs they are associated with.
