Try turning the engine by hand until the pump rod is pushed UP. Grease usually works. Try heavier grease such as the type used on wheel bearings. You could also try screwing a long bolt into the tapped hole in the front of the block that aligns with the push rod. This hole should go all the way through to the cavity. When it touches the push rod, it won't be able to fall down while you install the pump. The hole should be tapped 3/8-16, and you will need a bolt with a couple inches of thread.
