The answer to this would fill a small book! The fireplace has certain design measurements that are related to each other- size of opening at front, angles of sides, angle of slope at top, size of back, size of flue, depth of fireplace, height of chimney above surrounding surfaces, etc.

A fireplace that follows those design elements will work and burn well. When those designs are not followed, you will not only have a smoky house, but an increased risk of fire, carbon monoxide poisoning, etc. The design criteria are available- do a on line search for "fireplace design", check with your library- or find a mason that builds fireplaces, and buy him a cup of coffee.

PS- you will need more than one kind of brick- the firebox should be lined with firebrick- the flue lined with a clay tile liner (or metal flue).

When were chimneys invented?

Chimneys were invented during the 12th century in Northern Europe, though we do not know who invented them, or precisely where. The oldest known example of a chimney dates from the year 1185. Prior to the invention of the chimney, smoke was vented in various ways. One was to have a hole in the roof, possibly with a vent cover called a louver to keep rain out. Another was to vent through window-like holes high in the walls, possibly with louvers to keep birds and bats out. Another way, used in castle and monastery kitchens, was merely to have very large, high windows. There was a thing called a smoke canopy, which gathered the smoke and vented it through the roof or a wall. A hearth that was situated against a stone wall, with a smoke canopy over it, looked rather like a fireplace, such as would have a chimney, even though no chimney existed. There is a link below to a question on smoke canopies. There is also a link to the history section of an article on chimneys, as well as a link to a picture of a great hall of the Late Middle Ages, with the hearth in the middle of the room.

When wood burns in a fireplace is mass lost?

No, mass is an innate property of matter, and matter can not be destroyed in a chemical reaction. Although after the fire the remains (ashes) weigh less than the original wood, the fire has also produced CO2, Carbon (soot/smoke) and H2O as gases and this is where the mass that was once part of the wood has gone.

What happens if your smoke detectors goes off but there's no smoke?

This may because specs of dust can cause activation of the detector as it has the same effect as smoke. Spiders also can crawl into the sensors which does the same thing- same way with deodrant, paintfumes etc. It also may be because the smoke detector is just faulty.
