Snaps were first patented by German inventor Heribert Bauer in 1885 as the "Federknopf-Verschluss", a novelty fastener for men's trousers. However, it wasn't until Jack Weil (1901-2008) patented a new kind of snap, which he put on his iconic shirts, that the word "snap" came into being. After the creation of the "Rockmount Shirt" snaps became a staple in clothing and fashion.
