They were invented by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Corporation, known more familiarly as 3M Corporation. The Post-It notes were created by accident. Dr. Spencer Silver was trying to invent a new kind of glue, but it didn't turn out as expected. It didn't have much staying power and would pull off rather easily. Now they had a dilemma. They had a whole lot of this glue and nothing to do with it. Art Fry, also an employee had an idea for a personal project. 3M, like a lot of companies, allowed personal projects to be done on company time under certain conditions. So he took advantage of this to try to create an adhesive bookmark. Somehow, 3M got the idea to sell them for leaving personal reminders and similar. They sent out a number of these as free samples and about 94% said they would by such a product. They reached store shelves in 1980.
