Even after the null result of the Michelson-Morley experimient the existence of luminerferous ether continued to be taken for granted by expert consensus until the 1905 publication of Einstein's theory of Special Relativity. Special Relativity did not disprove the existence of the ether (scientific proof is, in principle, not possible). What it did do was show that the ether was not necessary to explain any known property of nature. Being redundant and lacking utility the ether was therefore gradually dropped as a topic of study and discussion.
