Different answers can be given to this. Some Chinese people had created a basic design for a flying machine that used bamboo and were just used as toys in the 4th century. It is said that Leonardo Da Vinci had a design for a helicopter. He lived in the 15th and 16th centuries. Since then, many other scientists and inventors have come up with designs getting closer to what we would think of as the modern helicopter. It was only in the early 20th century that these machines were actually begun to be built and flown.
