Urban planning, deliberate planning of cities- hence Urban, really got it start in the US with the work of L"Enfant, a French topographical service engineer on loan from the French Army. C. l803 He was primarily responsible for the design of Washington DC as an Urban whole- not specific buildings such as the White House ( Hoban) or the Capitol ( Various architects, as it was revised following its function as an improvised field hospital during the Civil War.) Other big names in Urban planning would of necessity include the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, among others, and somewhat surprisingly the Science-fiction artist and cartoonist Harry Grant Dart, who along with some advanced aircraft had some neat urban planning ideas- and were crafted with considerable detail. I like his New Milano with aerial bridges linking up skyscrapers and reducing street traffic to a manageable level- this was in the teens.
