While his name sounds like something to do with forests, Le DeForest (1873-1961) was actually an inventor and an engineer. He lived in the early days of radio, and invented something called an "audion tube"-- which takes weak signals and makes them stronger. He was one of the people who made major contributions to the history of broadcasting. I enclose a link to a biography about him.
