Eugene Ely was a pilot who piloted a Curtiss biplane on the first flight to take off from a ship. Also asphalt was being manufactured from oil refining byproducts.
The 747 and A380 both have a flight engineer on board as well as a flight supervisor who has an office behind the cockpit.
Some inventions for flight engineers are the supercritical wing, and the rotary control mechanism.
All in good time, powered flight has only been around for just over 100 years. Right now the cost and technology isn't in place.
