Long Distance Communications these days is handled by Microwave Towers. The good news is that these towers can be placed large distances away from each other so large distances are covered. The bad news is the towers must be in line-of-site of each other or the signal will be lost. Hilly areas are a good example of bad line of site.

Why is cattle-rearing important in the hilly west?

Cattle rearing is important in this area because crops cannot be grown in such hilly terrain. Livestock like cattle are much more advantageous to raise in such terrain than wheat or corn because they aren't apt to flip over on you like a tractor would on the steep hills that often exist in such topography.

Is an outside antenna required when a satellite radio is used in the house?

Not if you are in a fairly large metropolitan area where they have XM repeaters all over town. If that doesn't work well, put your antenna on a window sill. Most indoor XM antennae have a 20' cord for this purpose.
