Because the meter is actually measuring the current through the resistor, and

the two quantities ... current and resistance ... are inversely proportional.

So when the meter measures more current, it has to read less resistance, whereas

higher resistance will result in less current. So the numbers for resistance have to be

printed "backwards" on the meter scale.

Does an Ohmeter that has an infinite reading indicates an open circuit?

Yes, an infinite reading on an Ohmmeter usually indicates an open circuit. This means that there is a break in the circuit, preventing the flow of current and resulting in the high resistance reading.

The ohmmeter differs from other types of meters in that it has its own?

Electric supply, usually a battery.

What tool can be used to test for electrical conductivity?

The easiest way is to use an Ohmmeter. This function is usually built into most multimeter that can be bought at any hardware store. An Ohmmeter measures the electrical resistance of a material. The lower the number the more conductive that material is. If the Ohm reading is above the maximum reading on the meter then their is infinite resistance which means that the material is not a conductor of electricity.

The will measure resistance only?

The ohmmeter is usually used to measure the resistance of a given wire only.

What instrument measures voltage?

Resistance is measured with an ohmmeter. A link is provided to a brief article on the ohmmeter posted at Wikipedia.Note that it is unusual in this day and age to have a device that will measure ohms and nothing else. The ohmmeter is usually included among the functions of a multimeter, and usually a digital multimeter or DMM.

What is the difference in series type and shunt type ohmmeter?

In a series type ohmmeter, the current passes through the resistance being measured, while in a shunt type ohmmeter, the current is diverted around the resistance being measured. Series type ohmmeters are usually less accurate but simpler, while shunt type ohmmeters are more accurate but more complex.

Can the word reading refer to required reading?

In school the word reading usually does mean that it is required reading. At home no reading is usually voluntary and done mostly for pleasure or curiosity.

What is infinity on a multimeter?

If is being used as an ohmmeter it usually means an open circuit. A switch may be open, or a wire is broken (not a short circuit)
