You do not need to be an engineering genius to invent something. All you need to create a good invention is an idea and a method. If you are aggressive enough, you can either learn how to create your own invention or find someone to help you. Remember to protect yourself with non-disclosure agreements and patent filings each time you create something. The worst thing that can happen is that you invent something wonderful, and then someone else brings it to market without needing your permission.

An idea

Every good invention starts with an idea. Your ideas will fit into one of two categories; you will find a way to improve an existing process or you will think of a completely original solution. Brainstorm on your idea and begin writing down every pertinent piece of information you can think of. Draw diagrams, ask experts questions and write down the answers and start formulating your idea. Be sure you create clear drawings and descriptions so you can explain your idea to others.

There is no such thing as a bad idea. When you are brainstorming, write down everything that comes to mind as it may be useful later on in your development phase. Hire an attorney

If you intend to invent something, then you will need an attorney to help you document your claim. When you get an idea and create drawings for it, take them to your attorney and have the creation dates of the documents notarized. You will also want your attorney to create non-disclosure agreements so that you can speak to engineers and manufacturers without having someone steal your idea.

Bring it to life

Even if you are not good with your hands or you cannot create the detailed engineering elements of your invention, you should still create a prototype so that people can better understand your idea. Once you have your prototype and your documented invention idea, you need to assemble your team of people to bring your idea to life. If you are able to do all of the developmental work on your own then you just saved yourself a lot of money and aggravation. But if you need help, then seek it out and use your non-disclosure agreements to protect your ideas.

Prototype and patent

The goal of your initial development process is to develop a fully functioning prototype that you can use to sell to manufacturers or continue to develop on your own. Create detailed drawings and specifications on your prototype and then have your attorney file for a patent. Once you receive notification that your application has been received, your idea is protected by a patent pending.

Inventing something is not a task reserved for a particular kind of person. Anyone with a good idea and persistence can invent something that will benefit people all over the world.
