yeah, that's pretty much what happened to my first "serious" fortress.
my first time booting up i mostly just tinkered with the interface and learned the keys. before abandoning and starting for real.
anyway my first fortresdid fairly well for a while, at its height i had nearly 110 dwarves living in it.

That is the correct spelling of the pronoun "myself."
