• Shapes: The "no" sign, is circle with a line through it, denoting that its not allowed or "no". Like in a no smoking sign.
  • Also used for traffic signs (ie: stop sign (red octagon), yield sign (yellow triangle), for warning signs, consumer signs, etc. see below

• Colours/Colors: (can vary dramatically between cultures)
  • The color green can mean jealousy/evny or fertility or even both, depending on context. Green is also an ecological color for recycling and protecting the earthfrom pollution, etc. Also politically used for the "Green party:
  • The color red: for 'warning', 'desire, sin, guilt, pain, passion, blood, and anger. A Biblical example is found in Isaiah: "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow."
  • The color white symbolizes purity. Such as a white wedding dress to symbolize the bride is "pure" before marriage.
  • Red is used as a traffic sign/signal for "stop". Yellow to yield, green for go.
• Religious, esoteric, philosophical, metaphysical and mystical symbols
  • The Christian cross, to symbolize Christ's crucification and sacrifice.
  • The olive as a symbol of peace dates back to at least to the 5th century BCE

  • The dove and olive branch for Noah in the Bible, God's grace apon Jesus. Also was used on currency on early Roman coins, and later on American and Britsh

  • In the U.S: The donkey for the Democratic party, and the elephant for the Republican party
  • A Dove for the UK Liberal Democrats party
  • Peace symbol, also an olive branch and dove (can be religious too)
    • The dove was chosen as the emblem for the World Peace Congress in Paris in April 1949

Symbolism is everywhere, even more so in our increasingly capitalist society. Think of the "dynamic red ribbon device" i.e. the label on your bottle of coke.

Symbolism can also be something like a lion for courage, an eagle for the United States, a pine tree for Christmas etc...
