Another way to to express the word painting is to say, laying in color. Another word used in place of painting is stroking. "The artist strokes in vibrant hues of yellow." Also the word wash is used in place of painting. "Gently washing tints of umber will greatly effect the depth of tone." Now these answers are intended to answer the question if the word painting was used as a verb. If painting was being queried as a noun then the painting itself could be referred to as it's subject matter. For instance, the portrait, the landscape, the abstract, or simply the artwork. Sometimes even paintings can be called renditions if they are preliminary paintings or pieces in a series. Then if the artist is working in different mediums it is fine to use the name of the actual medium in describing the work; ie, the watercolor, gauche, acrylic, oil, etc. But if the question is only referring to the simple action of painting, as in the painting a house then I would suggest another person qualified as a painting contractor give their input.
