Prayers are an active attempt to influence the gods (male, female, uppercase, lowercase, singular or plural) to intercede on your part to have something change or occur.
If all you do in pray about something you can influence, by thought or deed, then you are only going half way. Foe example if you pray to have your debts paid, but refuse to go out and look for an extra income, or paying job, then your prayers most likely won't be answered. There is an expression, "The gods feed the birds, but they don't drop food into the nest."
If you are praying for something that is entirely out of your control; for example, the safety of a friend or family member in a combat situation, then your prayers will be heard, and it is up to the gods to decide if they will answer you. Sometimes there is a bigger plan involved and we are unable to see the entirety of it.
There is no support from science that prayers are ever answered. Many people credit random "good" events in their lives as being answered prayers whike ignoring "unanswered" prayers as being the result of them not bring scincere enough, or their god's "higher purpose" in not answering the prayers.
