Yes it can, it's a unisex term, although I do admit that it's usually used for boys. A girl is a kid too though.

"Kids," the plural, can be a catch-all term for boys and girls (e.g. "we took a group of kids to the theme park.") "Kid" can also be an affectionate or pet name for a little girl ("You made me proud, kid!") or a way to address a little girl you don't know ("Hey kid! Know where the toilets are?") You can address a boy like that, too.
