Sundara first goes to visit her other family in a village, leaving behind her family(temporarily) in Phenm Phen. The Kmher Rouge, a communist group bent on taking over Cambodia, sacked the village she was in to help her aunt, Soka, deliver a baby. Naro, her uncle along with Ravy, Pon and grandmother boarded the ship, leaving her real family behind and the boy she loved. While taking care of Soka's baby, Pon, on the ship, Pon dies from malnutritience and that scarres her for the rest of her life. Four years later, they are in America and Sundara is almost accustomed to everyday life. She meets a boy named Johnathon who is interested in her for her stories of Cambodia. Though they want to be together, her kmher customes prohibit her from dating or even talking to Johnathon. To make matters worse, Johnathon's "girlfriend" is now in the picture and makes matters worse. While at Johnathon's house,(which she shouldn't but because her uncle and aunt, Naro and Soka, are out of town) they go sailing but then Johnathon drives to her house and that's when Soka found out about the affair. Though disappointed, Sundara still loves Johnathon and Johnathon loves her though they don't speak of it. Finally when Johnathon gets injured playing football and Sundara visits him, Johnathon confesses that he loves her and though shocked by this, Sundara declines and accepts. To end all this confusion, they paln to meet each other by the river to discuss their problems. They then both confess their love and kiss. Though Soka rejects this, she finally agrees but says that she shouldn't be "too American".
