The predecessor to the piano was the harpsichord. Instead of hammers hitting strings, it has small picks the pluck the string as it passes. There is no dynamic control on the harpsichord. No matter how hard or soft you play the notes, the loudness of the instrument remains the same.

The musical term for loud is forte denoted by an italicized F (f) The word for soft is piano denoted by a lower case italicized p (p).

When the piano was invented, it was very revolutionary as it could play both loud and soft. The term pianoforte was used as a description of the instrument that could play both soft and loud. Pianoforte is the original name for the instrument, however, the shortened version became common enough, and most people refer to the instrument as the piano.
