The House of Hwang represented wealth, but also greed and corruption; ultimately, as result of their lack of morality, Hwang and his family lost their prestige and power, and the novel's main character Wang Lung had enough money to buy their house and land. The irony is that Wang Lung, who had gone from a life of poverty to gradually becoming rich and successful himself, had become just like the people in the House of Hwang.
