Energy is 'the ability to do work', and is available in many forms, including electrical energy, chemical energy, etc. Energy is measured in terms of the work it can do. Workdescribes the process of converting one form of energy into another form -for example, an electric motor does work when it converts electrical energy into kinetic energy. In the SI system, energy and work are measured in joules. When you buy energy from your electricity supplier, it is measured in kilowatt hours which is simply a bigger unit of energy compared to a joule.

Power is 'the rate of doing work'. In the SI sytem, power is measured in watts -which is a special name for a joule per second. So, for example, a 60 W lamp converts electrical energy into heat/light at the rate of 60 joules per second. The horsepower is another example of an unit for measuring power -the horsepower is simply a bigger unit than the watt (746 W = 1 hp). Other than in the United States, the horsepower is no longer used; car engines, for example, are expressed in kilowatts in most other countries.
