Juli couldn't visit her uncle David because he has a mental problem. (I don't mean that in a bad way). When she finally gets to see her uncle David (on his birthday), he was scared because he didn't know who it was until Juli's father told him she was his niece. They went out to get him ice cream and he got a brain-freeze and he dropped his ice cream cone and he flipped out and Juli had to get him another ice cream cone to control him.
That's all I know based on the book and movie.
