Alfred T. Mahan, Admiral of the U.S. Navy, urged government officials to build up American naval power in order to compete with other powerful nations. Steel-hull cruisers were built in between the years of 1883 and 1890. Battleships such as the Oregon and the Maine transformed the country into the world's third largest naval power.
