A 'regular' or weak verb in English has a very simple paradigm of entirely predictable forms. All of its persons have the same root; its preterite (and usually the past particple) is formed by the simple addition of -ed to the stem.

Regular verbs conjugate to the past tense by adding -ed, -ied, or -d

WALK becomes WALKED

STUDY becomes STUDIED

An irregular very such as BUY does not conjugate in this regular form. For the past tense we do not say BUYED but rather BOUGHT.

Children often have difficultly learning irregular verbs as they try to universally apply the rules for past tense and will often say things like "boughted" in an attempt to conjugate the irregular verb in a regular form.

Regular verbs are used in sentences to describe an action. An example would be the word 'ran' in the sentence, 'Spot ran two miles today.'
