Absolutely. Although there are good devices out there like the new Amazon Kindle, that allow you to read as you travel, battery limitation, and title limitation are huge factors. If I want to get an out-of-print book by Zenna Henderson for instance, I have to go paper. No one makes electronic versions of some of the things that I want to read. Plus, if you are studying, it is hard to write notes in the margin with most readers. Some of them allow highlighting, but it is rare to find one that allows notes. Many readers have so many restrictions built into them that it is very hard to move your book from one place to another. I bought a book by Nancy Kress in an electronic format, because it was the only format available at the time, and I could read it on my computer screen, but I couldn't loan it to my mom to read, or share it with my friends. I think that stinks. Paper books are friendlier like that. If I really like a book, I can loan it to other people to read, or take to a friend's house to read out loud. PLUS... what about picture books? The experience of reading a Doctor Suess book for kids is completely not the same without the pictures... and even if they have a reader that can reproduce the pictures, the screens are so small that it still won't be the same for kids. ... We definitely still need books. I am not saying that electronic literature is bad. It is great. It just doesn't fill all the needs that a book fills.
Yes. Not every book has been digitised yet. If schools were to convert their library to digital-only then they would still be lacking a lot of books. Students can also borrow books from their library to continue reading at home. They can't take home their library's computer to continue reading.
Books are still popular but e-books are also becoming more popular. So to answer your question books aren't a thing of the past but they may be in a few years from now.
Nicky cruz wrote 16 books and is hopefully still writing.
